The 1935 Chicago Cubs set a National League record with a 21-game winning streak that started on September 4th with an 8-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies and lasted until the second game of a doubleheader on September 27th. It ended with a 7-5, extra-innings loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on September 28th, the season's penultimate day. The Cubs had been in third place, 2 1/2 games back of first, when the streak started. They reached a tie for first place on September 13th and were up by 6 games by the time of their last win. The Cubs went on to meet the Detroit Tigers in the 1935 World Series, but lost in 6 games.

The winning streak is the longest in National League history that does not include any tie games; the 1880 Chicago White Stockings, a direct ancestor of this team, also had a 21-game winning streak, but with a tie included. In setting the record for consecutive wins, the Cubs beat that team (their last 20 wins were consecutive) as well as the 1884 Providence Grays who also won 20 consecutive games. The major league record was also shared by the 1884 St. Louis Maroons of the Union Association. The 1916 New York Giants had put together a 27-game unbeaten streak, but with a tie in the middle. The Cubs lost the major league record when the 2017 Cleveland Indians won 22 straight games.
