History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 1912 Chicago White Sox got off to an excellent start, with a record of 23-6 in their first 29 games. On May 19th, they were in first place in the American League with a 5 1/2 game lead over their nearest rivals, the Boston Red Sox, but they played poorly after that. Typical of this collapse were pitchers Joe Benz and Frank Lange, who had combined for 12 wins over the opening stretch, but went 12-26 the rest of the year. One pitcher who did not falter was Ed Walsh, who had the last great season of his Hall of Fame career, going 27-17 with a 2.15 ERA. He would never again win in double figures after that.
