The 1907 St. Louis Cardinals were off to a historically bad start until they started playing slightly better starting in August. They won only 23 of their first 101 games and were a whopping 18 games out of 7th place when they started beating up on their closest rivals, the Boston Doves. They ended up winning their final 9 games against Boston, and from August 8th onwards, they actually had a winning record, going 29-23. On September 2nd, they even managed to sweep a doubleheader from the first-place Chicago Cubs, winning both games by shutout, 6-0 and 9-0, behind the pitching of Art Fromme and Johnny Lush, narrowing the gap between the two teams to 51 games. In addition to the two pitchers, P Ed Karger and rookie 1B Ed Konetchy also played very well down the stretch, keying the unlikely turnaround. Stoney McGlynn was the staff workhorse, going 14-25 and leading the National League in 9 categories including games started, complete games, innings pitched, hits, runs, walks and losses.
