Biographical Information

Édgar Arredondo has pitched as high as AAA and in the Olympics.

He played for Mexico in the 2012 U15 Baseball World Cup. debuted with the Tigres de Quintana Roo at age 15 (and 11 months), the youngest player in Mexican League history. He pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk. He was then signed by Texas Rangers scouts Bill McLaughlin and Manuel Velez. He had elbow surgery that winter, though, and missed the entire 2014 season.

Arredondo made his US debut with the 2015 AZL Rangers, going 0-1 with a 3.97 ERA. The next year, he had a 6-2, 1.60 record for the DSL Rangers 1, walking only four in 62 innings! He was one win shy of the Dominican Summer League top 10 and was also very close to the top 10 in ERA, 11th, .08 behind Andrés Sotillet. That winter, he was 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA in three starts for his hometown Tomateros de Culiacán in his Mexican Pacific League (LMP) debut.

In the summer of 2017, he was 6-6 with a 3.86 ERA for the Hickory Crawdads with a 5:1 K:BB ratio. Among Rangers farmhands with 100+ IP, he had the second-lowest walk rate. He split 2018 between the Frisco RoughRiders (0-4, 4.80 in 9 G) and Down East Wood Ducks (5-2, 2.88, 68 K in 59 1/3 IP in 11 G). That winter, he was 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA for the Tomateros, nearly identical with his prior stats there.

With the 2019 RoughRiders, he posted a 7-3, 4.17 record. He made another three starts in winter ball (1-1, 3.38). The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. Returning to duty with Culiacán for 2020-2021, he was 5-1 with a 2.40 ERA. He tied Fabián Anguamea, Manny Barreda and Aldo Montes for 7th in the LMP in wins and would have had the league's best ERA had he qualified (Javier Solano led at 2.62). In the 2021 Caribbean Series, he allowed three runs in 4 2/3 IP against the Caribes de Anzoátegui but was rescued by Montes and the bullpen to get a no-decision.

A minor league free agent, he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He began 2021 well with the Amarillo Sod Poodles (4-1, 3 Sv, 3.27, 31 K in 22 IP) and was promoted to the Reno Aces. He was not with Reno long before he joined the Mexican national team for the 2020 Olympics (which were held in 2021, delayed due to COVID-19 from their initial date, but keeping the 2020 name), as he and Anguamea replaced Sammy Solís and Héctor Velázquez after those two former major leaguers came down with COVID. He made one appearance in those Olympics, relieving Juan Pablo Oramas in the 4th with a 2-1 deficit against host (and Gold Medal winner) Japan. He began by retiring Ryosuke Kikuchi but then allowed singles to Munetaka Murakami and Takuya Kai and a three-run homer to Olympic MVP Tetsuto Yamada. He struck out Hayato Sakamoto and got Masataka Yoshida on the grounder. After Mexico made up one run in the bottom of the 4th, he retired Seiya Suzuki on a ground-out and walked Hideto Asamura. Sasagi Sánchez then relieved. He tied Jairo Asencio for the 5th-highest ERA in those Olympics.
