Biographical Information[edit]

Liu Yu has been a pitcher for the Beijing Tigers. He pitched for the Chinese national team in the 2012 Asia Series and 2012 Asian Championship. In the 2013 World Baseball Classic, Liu was lit up in a relief appearance against the Cuban national team. Relieving Xin Li with a 4-0 deficit, one out and one on in the 4th, he gave up a double to Frederich Cepeda, retired José Dariel Abreu, served up a two-run double to Alfredo Despaigne and then got Yulieski Gourriel to end the inning. In the fifth, he retired Eriel Sánchez before letting the next six batters reach. He walked Erisbel Arruebarruena, the #9 hitter, then gave up a single to Guillermo Heredia Jr. and walked Yasmani Tomás to load the bases. José Miguel Fernández rapped a two-run single to make it 10-0. After a walk to Cepeda, Abreu hit a grand slam for a 12-0 score. Liu retired both Despaigne and Gourriel to escape further damage but had been charged with 7 runs in 1 2/3 IP. He next played in hte 2013 East Asian Games.

In the 2014 Asian Games, he pitched 1 1/3 IP over two games, allowing one hit and fanning two; he was the fourth of six pitchers in a combined no-hitter versus Mongolia, following Xiang Zhang, Ziliang Li and Song Ran and followed by Jianzeng Sun and Qingyuan Meng. He had the lowest ERA on the Chinese staff in the 2015 Asian Championship, beating Indonesia (1 R in 5 IP, 6 H, 6 K) for one of their two wins and allowing one unearned run (2 H, 1 BB) in one inning against South Korea. Only Xin Li had more strikeouts for China in the tournament.
