Biographical Information[edit]

Yu-Chan Liu pitched for the Chinese Taipei National Team and in the CPBL. His uncle Cheng-Yuan Liu also played for the Chinese Taipei National Team.

Liu represented Taiwan in the 1995 Universiade and the 1995 Asian Championship. The Chinatrust Whales signed Liu in 1999. He was 2-4 with a 3.38 ERA and pitched 43 games in his rookie year, and also participated in the All-Star Game as a rookie. Liu extended his good condition the next year, and had a 2.82 ERA in 79 2/3 innings. However, he struggled in 2001, when his ERA rose to 7.47 in 26 appearances. The Taitung native bounced back in 2003, and recorded a 3.03 ERA in 37 game pitched. Liu tore his labrum in 2004, and missed the entire 2005 season. He came back the next year, recorded a 3.61 ERA and pitched 35 games. 2008 was his career year, as Liu recorded a 2.97 ERA in 48 games, and collected a career-high 5 holds. When the Whales dissolved in 2008, the Brother Elephants picked him up. Liu didn't pitch well in 2009, recording a 3-8 record in 15 starts with a 6.47 ERA. He was banned by the league because of the gambling scandal after 2009 season.

Liu's repertoire included a fastball (peak 94 mph), curveball, slider, changeup, sinker and forkball.

Overall, Liu was 14-22 with a 4.38 ERA and pitched 511 1/3 innings in seven seasons in the CPBL.
