Biographical Information[edit]

Vojtěch Menšík has played for the Czech national team.

He debuted in the Extraliga in 2015; the 17-year-old held his own, batting .308/.357/.374 for Hrosi Brno. [1] He hit .360/.385/.400 for the Czechs in the 2015 U-18 Baseball World Cup, fielding .872 as a middle infielder. He tied Marek Chlup for the team lead in hits (9). He tied Cole Stobbe, Marten Gasparini and Andrea Sellaroli for second in the event with five errors, one behind Lucas Sakay. [2] In 2016, he fell to .229/.316/.314 for Hrosi Brno. [3] He produced at a .286/.483/.333 clip in the 2016 U18 European Championship, with eight walks and six runs in six games, fielding .941. He tied Aldrich De Jongh for second in walks, one behind Tijmen Takke. He led fielders in assists (23, 3 ahead of Richard Brereton) and double plays (7). [4]

For Hrosi Brno in '17, he was at .227/.333/.311 but with 18 walks and 29 runs in 33 games, stealing 17 bases in 18 tries. He tied Tomáš Juněc, Přemek Chroust and Martin Schneider for 10th in walks, was 5th in steals and tied Arnošt Dubový and Petr Čech for 8th in runs. He fell to .200/.339/.200 in the postseason, with 9 walks in 14 games; he stole 8 but was caught 5 times. [5] When the Czechs finished second in the 2017 U23 European Championship, he produced at a .385/.680/.462 clip with 11 walks and 12 runs in six games, fielding .968. He was second in OBP (behind teammate Martin Mužík), tied Denzel Richardson for the most runs and led in walks (one ahead of Marcel Jimenez). [6]

During 2018, he improved to .314/.430/.429 for Hrosi Brno, with 21 steals (in 25 tries) and 20 runs in 27 games in the regular season, but fell to .222/.327/.444 in the postseason. He led in swipes, four ahead of Michal Ondráček. His seven times hit by pitch tied for second, four behind Michal Zýma. [7] He hit .421/.542/.632 with six runs and seven RBI in five games in the 2018 World University Championship, fielding .909. He had three RBI in the 5th/6th place game win over Russia. He was 8th in the event in average, tied Jakub Ondráček for 9th in hits, tied for 10th in runs, tied for 6th in RBI, tied for 6th in total bases and tied for second in steals. [8]

The Brno native came to the US for college and batted .250/.366/.367 as a freshman at NC State, stealing nine bases in nine tries. Returning to the Extraliga for the playoffs, he hit .240/.345/.440. [9] He did not do as well in the U23 European Championship that year as he had two years prior, posting a .176/.300/.412 batting line and fielding .889, while scoring five times in five games. He tied Fred Walter for the most assists (13) and tied for third in runs, behind teammates Mužík and Martin Červinka. [10]

He batted .250/.366/.367 for NC State in 2020 before the season was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Back in Czechia, he hit .286/.415/.408 in the shortened regular season and .395/.521/.526 in the playoffs. Combining the two phases, he tied for 7th in doubles (9), was 7th in OBP (between Čech and Daniel Vavruša) and tied for 5th in steals. [11] He hit .239/.308/.358 with 11 steals in 14 tries as a college junior, playing every day (usually at third) for a NC State team that made the 2021 College World Series. He was the first Czech player in a College World Series. [12] He then signed with the Los Angeles Angels. [13] He made it to the senior Czech national team for the first time, at the 2021 European Championship. He laid down a sacrifice bunt his first time up, against the Swedish national team's Jakob Syrén then doubled and scored two innings later. He was the Czech's main third baseman in the event and also played a little second and short, producing at a .316/.458/.684 clip with ten runs in six games, including a homer off Croatia's Borna Strelec as part of a four-run game. A lowlight was an error against Israel that led to an unearned run in a 3-2 loss. He tied Ray-Patrick Didder and former major leaguer Engel Beltre for third in the Euros in runs, and was third among the Czech regulars in slugging (after Chlup and Matěj Hejma). [14] In the 2021 U-23 Baseball World Cup, he hit .241/.241/.379 and fielded .919, mostly playing short. [15]

Menšík began his US pro career in 2022 as a utility infielder with the Inland Empire 66ers.
