Biographical Information

Tyson Auer played as high as AAA in a minor league career that spanned from 2008 to 2012. Auer's father, Joe, played in the AFL & NFL for 5 years.

Amateur Career

Auer hit .346 with a .439 OBP and 14 steals in 16 tries as a high school senior. He batted .240/.284/.368 as a college freshman but was 15-for-18 in steals. As a sophomore, he improved to .323/.356/.463 with 6 triples and 30 runs in 41 games, stealing 17 bases while being caught once. He tied for second in Conference USA in triples. His junior year, Tyson put up a .356/.406/.425 line with 46 runs and 27 SB (7 CS) in 58 games. He was second in Conference USA in swipes. In 2008, his production fell - .273/.367/.361, 21 SB, 5 CS, 47 R in 58 G, only 11 extra-base hits. He was not picked in the 2008 amateur draft. He finished third in UCF history with 80 career steals. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim scout Tom Kotchman signed him as a free agent.

Minor League Career

Auer made his pro debut with the Orem Owlz and hit .287/.368/.416 while being gunned down in 3 of 8 steal attempts. In 2009, Tyson batted .277/.344/.346 for the Cedar Rapids Kernels with 84 runs, 43 SB (caught 18 times), a .993 fielding percentage in center and 9 assists. He was 5th in the Midwest League in steals and 4th in times caught stealing. He tied Alexi Amarista for 7th in runs scored. The Floridian bounced around in 2010, playing for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (.332/.387/.453 in 65 G), Arkansas Travelers (.308/.360/.395 in 44 G) and Salt Lake Bees (.255/.327/.426 in 14 G). He hit 12 triples, scored 95 runs and stole 54 bases in 74 tries. He ranked 3rd among Angels farmhands in runs (behind Mike Trout and Mark Trumbo), tied for 1st in triples (with Matt Long, Peter Bourjos and Jean Segura), was second in steals (2 behind Trout) and was caught stealing the most. He tied for 4th in the affiliated minors in times caught stealing, behind Anthony Gose, Kyle Rose and Francisco Peguero.

In 2011, Auer started in center in AAA, not bad for a guy who was undrafted three years prior. He hit .280/.311/.365 for Salt Lake, with only 15 walks, 4 triples and one home run. He stole 21 bases but was caught 12 times. He had 8 outfield assists to one error. He tied for third in the 2011 PCL in times caught stealing, behind Luis Durango and Adron Chambers. He hit .197/.240/.282 in 20 games between the AZL Angels and Arkansas Travelers in 2012.

Overall, he hit .287/.342/.379 with 125 stolen bases and 23 triples in 389 games over five seasons.
