Biographical Information

Matt Long has played in the minor leagues since 2009, reaching AAA for the first time in 2012.

College Career

Long hit .336/.399/.408 as a freshman in college; Collegiate Baseball named him a Freshman All-American. He fell to .304/.375/.392 as a sophomore in 2007. In 2008, he hit .303/.409/.539 with 54 runs and 11 home runs in 55 games. He was 4th in the West Coast Conference in runs, 5th in hits (69), 3rd in walks (36) and tied for second in triples (5). The Arizona Diamondbacks took him in the 23rd round of the 2008 amateur draft but he did not sign. His senior year at Santa Clara, Long batted .288/.341/.452. His six triples were third in the WCC. He finished second in Santa Clara history in at-bats (875) and triples (14), third in hits (269) and total bases (393) and 4th in runs (160). The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim took him in the 30th round of the 2009 amateur draft.

Minor League Career

Long split the summer of 2009 between the AZL Angels (.283/.372/.435 in 50 G) and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (4 for 16, 2B, HR, BB). He was second in the Arizona League with 9 triples, one behind teammate Randal Grichuk. Moving up to the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2010, he hit a solid .305/.382/.446 with 30 doubles, 12 triples, 87 runs and 23 steals in 32 tries. He also had 14 outfield assists and 6 double plays (tied with Carlo Testa for most by a Midwest League flyhawk that year). He tied Jean Segura for 4th in the MWL in three-baggers while tying for 6th in runs.

In 2011, Matt starred for the Inland Empire 66ers (.301/.382/.507, 104 R, 11 3B, 16 HR, 26 SB, 12 CS in 121 G) and also hit .282/.354/.465 in 17 games for the Arkansas Travelers, finishing the year with 119 runs, 34 doubles, 12 triples, 18 home runs, 84 RBI and 34 steals. He had 18 outfield assists and led California League outfielders with 7 double plays. He finished second in the circuit in triples (behind Gary Brown) and he was 4th in runs (trailing Daniel Carroll, Brown and Angelo Songco). He led Angels minor leaguers in runs scored, tied for third in the minors with Jedd Gyorko behind only Robbie Grossman and Alex Liddi.

On December 18, 2014, the Angels sent Matt to the Los Angeles Dodgers as the player to be named later in the trade that had brought C Drew Butera over on December 9th. The Dodgers then immediately sent him to the Milwaukee Brewers, alongside P Jarret Martin, in return for C Shawn Zarraga.
