Two-way players

From BR Bullpen

Here are two lists of players who pitched and played other positions.

First, I counted 21 players who pitched at least 160 games, and fielded at least 160 games. In particular, two players pitched and fielded over 300 games. I've listed just their main team(s) and their main position(s)

Games pitched; Other games; name etc

340 388 Bob Caruthers, 1884-93, RF, St Louis

336 397 Guy Hecker, 1882-90, P / 1B, Louisville

299 1670 Kid Gleason, 1888-1912, 2B, Phillies / Giants

292 1628 John Ward, 1878-94, SS/2B, Giants

347 269 George Bradley, 1876-88, P / 3B, nine teams

555 265 Tony Mullane, 1881-94, P / OF, Cincinnati

435 257 Bob Smith, 1923-37, P / SS, Braves

251 1916 Dave Foutz, 1884-96, 1B, Brooklyn

440 248 Adonis Terry, 1884-97, P/ LF, Brooklyn

245 559 Hal Jeffcoat, 1948-59, CF, Cubs / Reds

225 442 Joe Wood, 1908-22, RF, Red Sox / Indians

334 217 Win Mercer, 1894-1902, P / 3B, Washington

428 216 Bucky Walters, 1931-50, P / 3B, Cincinnati

414 205 Charlie Buffinton, 1882-92, P / RF, Braves

204 198 Ed Crane, 1884-93, P / RF, nine teams

195 684 Nixey Callahan, 1894-1913, LF, White Sox

187 226 Al Maul, 1884-1901, P/ RF / LF, Pittsburgh / Washington

388 185 Jack Stivetts, 1889-99, P / OF, Braves

230 167 Scott Stratton, 1888-95, P / RF, Louisville

163 2273 Babe Ruth 1914-35, RF/LF, Red Sox / Yankees

413 163 Jim Whitney, 1881-90, P / CF, Braves

As you might expect, only four of the 21 debuted in the 20th century, and all were gone by 1960. So the second, shorter list is all the players who pitched and fielded at least five games, since 1960.

140 53 Mel Queen, 1964-72, P / RF, Cincinnati

74 53 Brooks Kieschnick, 1996-2004, P / LF, Milwaukee

68 30 Danny Murphy, 1960-70, P / OF, Cubs / White Sox

51 536 Rick Ankiel, 1999-2013, P / OF, Cardinals / Nationals

29 432 Willie Smith, 1963-71, LF, Angels

7 1272 Vance Law, 1980-91, 3B / 2B, Montreal

420 7 Skip Lockwood, 1965-80, P / 3B, KC / Milwaukee

319 5 Ron Mahay, 1995-2007, P / CF, Boston / Texas

The latter group can be split in two: Kieschnick, Smith and Law had times when they were pitching and fielding; while the other four had a career in the field, and then a pitching career. Murphy had six seasons out of the majors between his last outfield game and his pitching debut.
