Biographical Information

Todd Redmond made his major league debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2012.

Redmond was 8-4 with a 2.40 ERA in college in 2004. The Pittsburgh Pirates took him as a draft-and-follow in the 39th round of the 2004 amateur draft. After a second year of junior college, he was signed by scout Rob Sidwell and debuted professionally with the 2005 Williamsport Crosscutters, going 1-2 but with a 1.98 ERA. He was second in the New York-Penn League in ERA behind Bobby Parnell. In 2006, Todd was 13-6 with a 2.75 ERA for the Hickory Crawdads, striking out 148 in 160 innings. He held opponents to a .227 average and 33 walks. He tied Frank Herrmann for the South Atlantic League lead in hit batsmen (17) and was third in ERA behind Matt Maloney and Carlos Carrasco. Redmond led Pirate farmhands in strikeouts and was second in wins behind Landon Jacobsen. Baseball America rated him as having the best change-up in the Pirates system.

Redmond struggled in 2007, going 7-12 with a 4.54 ERA for the Lynchburg Hillcats though his control was good (32 walks in 143 innings). He had a 1-1, 3.12 record with the Altoona Curve. In March of 2008, he was traded to the Atlanta Braves for Tyler Yates. He went 13-5 with a 3.52 ERA for the Mississippi Braves to help them win the Southern League title; Redmond was named SL Pitcher of the Year. His 133 strikeouts tied Anthony Barnette for the league lead, was third in ERA and led in wins.

In spite of his fast start in the professional ranks, it took him until 2012 to make it to the majors, having by that time been traded again, to the Cincinnati Reds in return for Paul Janish on July 14th of that year. He was the starting pitcher against the Chicago Cubs on August 18th, but was shelled for 7 hits and allowed 5 walks in 3 1/3 innings, leading to 4 runs and a 9-7 loss. It was his only major league appearance that season. Placed on waivers after the season, he was picked up first by the Baltimore Orioles and later by the Toronto Blue Jays. After starting the 2013 season with the AAA Buffalo Bisons, he was called up to Toronto on May 30th. He made a couple of relief appearances, giving up runs in both, and returned to Buffalo for another spell. He was back in early July and made another relief outing before starting against the Minnesota Twins on July 7th. He gave up a pair of runs on only one hit in 5 innings and was credited with his first career win, 11-5. He stayed in the starting rotation for the rest of the season, finishing at 4-3, 4.32 in 17 games, 14 of them starts. He pitched 77 innings, giving up only 70 hits and struck out 76 batters.

In 2014, Todd started the season in Toronto, pitching out of the bullpen. Pitching in middle relief, he was charged with four losses by the end of May in spite of keeping his ERA under 4.00. On May 31st, however, he earned his first big league save when he pitched the last three innings of a 12-2 win over the Kansas City Royals, completing the first major league win of Marcus Stroman.
