Biographical Information[edit]

Tim Dell pitched for Team Canada and for six years in the minor leaguers, peaking at AA.

Dell pitched for Team Canada in the 1987 Pan American Games. He was picked by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 28th round of the 1988 amateur draft, one selection prior to Scott Taylor. He was 1-0 with two saves, 1.21 ERA and .98 WHIP in 22 games for the Batavia Clippers. He was 10 innings shy of qualifying for the New York-Penn League lead or he would have been third after Dan Freed and Danilo Leon.

After that superb season in relief, the Phillies made Dell into a starter with the 1989 Spartanburg Phillies. He posted a 6-5, 3.00 record in 18 starts, including a 7-inning no-hitter against the Gastonia Rangers. Tim fell to 2-6, 5.46 for the 1990 Clearwater Phillies. Moving to the Milwaukee Brewers chain, he was 10-9 with a 2.69 ERA for the 1991 Stockton Ports. He was 7th in the California League in whiffs (131, between Greg Hansell and Terric McFarlin), 4th in hit batsmen (11), tied for third in balks (4) and 7th in wild pitches (14). He was 10 innings shy of qualifying for the ERA title; he would have passed Ricardo Jordan for 10th if he qualified. Among Brewers farmhands, he was tied for 6th in wins, 6th in Ks (between Jeff Schwarz and Geoff Kellogg), tied for third in hit batsmen, tied for 4th in wild pitches, tied for 5th in balks and was second in ERA among pitchers with 100+ IP (only Otis Green was better).

Dell moved up to AA with the El Paso Diablos in 1992. The tall right-hander was 5-5 with two saves and a 5.65 ERA in 36 games (12 starts). With El Paso again in 1993, he posted slightly better results (4-2, Sv, 5.13) but gave up 151 hits in 105 1/3 IP. Only Kurt Archer pitched more games for El Paso. Dell was 9th in the Texas League in hits allowed (between Brian Griffiths and Rick Helling). He tied for 8th in the Brewers chain in pitching appearances and was 9th in hits surrendered.

Tim finished his pro career 28-27 with five saves, three shutouts and a 3.83 ERA in 167 games (70 starts). In 550 1/3 innings, he gave up 568 hits (27 homers) and 177 walks while striking out 416. He resurfaced with the Brewers as a replacement player in spring 1995.
