Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Tim Alderson was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the first round of the 2007 amateur draft. He had gone 12-0 with a 1.05 ERA as a high school senior, fanning 111 and only walking 4 in 73 innings. Baseball America named him first-team high school All-American, joining Blake Beavan, Madison Bumgarner, Jarrod Parker and Rick Porcello as pitchers. Alderson was the 22nd pick of the 2007 amateur draft, between J.P. Arencibia and Nick Schmidt; the choice was San Francisco's second (after Bumgarner), compensation for the loss of Jason Schmidt via free agency.

Alderson was signed by scout Lee Carballo and made his pro debut that summer with the AZL Giants and did not allow an earned run in 3 appearances; he fanned 12 in five innings. In 2008, he was 13-4 with a 2.79 ERA for the San Jose Giants. He led the California League in ERA by .23 over Kevin Pucetas. He tied for third in wins with Jesse English and was 4th in strikeouts (124). He lost Pitcher of the Year honors to Pucetas and joined Pucetas and Sean O'Sullivan as the All-Star starting pitchers in the league. Baseball America rated him the #6 prospect in the league (behind Trevor Cahill, Carlos Santana, Lars Anderson, Brett Anderson and Jhoulys Chacin) and #4 in the San Francisco system.

Tim began 2009 with San Jose and was 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA after five games. Promoted to the Connecticut Defenders, Alderson went 6-1 with a 3.47 ERA.

On July 29, 2009, Alderson was dealt to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a major deal for former batting champion Freddy Sanchez.
