Biographical information

Jesse English is a pitcher who made his major league debut with the Washington Nationals on Opening Day, 2010. He attended Rancho Buena Vista High School and was drafted in the sixth round by the San Francisco Giants in the 2002 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Lee Carballo.

English played for the AZL Giants in 2002 and 2003. In 2002, he went 4-1 with a 2.68 ERA in 12 games started, striking out 68 batters in 47 innings while allowing just 33 hits. He was 6th in the Arizona League in ERA. Baseball America rated him as the circuit's #4 prospect after Felix Pie, Micah Schnurstein and Justin Jones. In 2003, he went 0-1 with a 3.98 ERA in seven games (six starts), striking out 31 batters in 20 1/3 innings. He played for the Hagerstown Suns in 2004, going 0-1 with a 7.48 ERA in 17 games (four starts). He missed all of 2005 due to injury, and in 2006 he went 3-0 with a 6.35 ERA in 17 relief appearances with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. He struck out 40 batters in 28 1/3 innings that season.

He split the 2007 season between the Volcanoes and San Jose Giants, going a combined 5-1 with a 1.31 ERA in 15 games. In 34 1/3 innings, he struck out 57 batters. In 2008, he played for the San Jose Giants, going 13-7 with a 3.19 ERA in 26 games started. He struck out 135 batters in 135 1/3 innings of work. Finally healthy again, the 23-year-old southpaw was third in the California League in strikeouts, tied Tim Alderson for third in wins and was 3rd in ERA among hurlers with 130+ innings. After being promoted to the Giants' major league roster after the 2008 season, he went 7-7, 4.20 in 26 games for the AA Connecticut Defenders in 2009, but was designated for assignment on September 2. He was picked up on waivers by the Washington Nationals a week later, and earned a spot on the team's pitching staff in spring training in 2010. Used on Opening Day, April 5 against the Philadelphia Phillies, he was a lone bright spot for the Nats in an 11-1 loss, giving up nothing in an inning and a third of relief work. He only made seven appearances in the majors, all in April. He had no decisions and allowed 10 hits, two walks and three runs in 7 innings while fanning four.

English spent the rest of the summer with the Syracuse Chiefs (2-1, 5.03 in 16 G) and the GCL Nationals (1 R in 4 IP). He moved to the independent leagues in 2011, going 0-1 with a save and a 1.76 ERA in 11 games for the St. Paul Saints, fanning 19 in 15 1/3 IP. With the 2012 Bridgeport Bluefish, he went 3-0 with a 3.48 ERA and struck out 57 in 54 1/3 IP. He began 2013 with the Broncos de Reynosa, going 3-1 with a save and a 3.32 ERA in 25 games. He then signed with Taiwan's EDA Rhinos.
