December 19: Today's featured birthday is that of Chito Martinez, who turns 59.
- 1926 - Bob O'Farrell is hired to replace Rogers Hornsby as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, fresh off a World Series appearance.
- 1953 - The only known six-for-one trade in Major League Baseball history takes place. The Pittsburgh Pirates send Danny O'Connell (pictured) to the Milwaukee Braves for Sam Jethroe, Curt Raydon, Sid Gordon, Max Surkont, Fred Waters, Larry Lassalle and $100,000.
- 1983 - Warren Cromartie signs a three-year, $2.5 million deal with the Yomiuri Giants, one of several prominent MLB players to jump to Japan during the decade, when salaries were competitive.
- 1994 - The Houston Astros and San Diego Padres pull off a 12-player trade. Most notably, Steve Finley and Ken Caminiti go to Houston while Derek Bell and Phil Plantier go to San Diego.
- 1998 - The Detroit Tigers send Luis González to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Karim Garcia in a steal for Arizona.
