Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Chito Martinez is (through 2023) the only major leaguer born in Belize, then known as British Honduras. Martinez played three seasons for the Baltimore Orioles, getting into 158 games total. He was managed by Johnny Oates. In his best season, 1991, he hit .269 and slugged .514.

Although born in Belize, Chito went to high school in New Orleans, LA, and was drafted in the sixth round of the 1984 Amateur Draft by the Kansas City Royals and scout Ken Gonzales.. He was in the Kansas City Royals minor league organization during 1984-1990, the Baltimore organization in 1991-1993, and finished up in the minors with the New York Yankees organization in 1994 and the Colorado Rockies organization in 1995.

His most impressive year in the minors was in 1991, when he hit .322 with 20 home runs in 60 games for the Rochester Red Wings, in the year that he first came to the majors.

His son Drew Martinez played in the minors and in independent ball.
