Biographical Information[edit]
Between 1964 and 1986, the first manager most players ever had in the Minnesota Twins organization was Fred Waters. Waters served as the first pro manager for Hall of Famers Rod Carew and Kirby Puckett. In 22 years of Rookie league managing Waters was 719-683.
His major league career consisted of 25 games as a pitcher over two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, with a pretty decent 2.89 ERA. He came out of the University of Southern Mississippi where he attended at the same time as Bubba Phillips.
In 1964, Waters managed the Melbourne Twins to the Cocoa Rookie League title, and he managed the FRL Twins in the 1965 Florida Rookie League. From 1966-1971, he managed the GCL Twins, and then the Melbourne Twins in the 1972 Florida East Coast League. In 1973, the Twins had no Rookie league teams, so Waters managed the Geneva Twins in the New York-Penn League. After scouting in 1974, Waters began a long term as the manager of the Elizabethton Twins, managing in the Appalachian League from 1975 until 1986, taking the league title in 1978 and 1984.
