The first Melbourne Twins played in the 1964 Cocoa Rookie League. The team finished first in the four team league with a record of 34-18. The team was managed by Fred Waters. Jim Bachus led the league with 44 runs, Gerald Lyscio led the league with 7 wins, and tied for the lead with 2 HRs. Claude Melton led the league with 63 Ks and a 1.22 ERA. Also on the team was an 18 year old Rod Carew in his first pro season. On August 30, Melton and Lyscio combined to no-hit the Cocoa Colts, winning 2-1 in 5 innings.

The next Melbourne Twins participated in the 1972 Florida East Coast League. The Twins, managed by Fred Waters, finished second at 35-22-3, 8 games behind the Melbourne Reds. They led the league in offense (330 runs) while allowing 268 scores. Lynn Buehner (4-1, 1.89) finished third in the league in ERA. The offense placed four of their players in the league's top five in hitting, including OF Dave Edwards (.313/~.416/.427, the league leader in average), 1B Randy Bass (.307/~.640/.533, the league leader in runs [47], total bases [106], doubles [15], homers [10], RBI [41], walks [59], OBP and slugging and second in average), OF Sam Askew (.302/~.416/.441, 4th in average) and 3B Ronnie Farkas (.298/~.431/.421).
