Talk:List of Cuban Defectors

Should this be a list or should we create a category "Cuban Defectors"? -Chisoxfan 16:32, 25 February 2010 (EST)
This list was begun with major league players born in Cuba after the revolution. They almost certainly defected either as children with their families or on their own specifically to play baseball. I'm sure there are more, especially those who were very young at the time of the revolution, but there was no way to verify them with the resources I have at hand. We can eventually add those that we are missing including the many minor leaguers. The PDF above should help if it's reliable. Kinston eagle 15:36, 11 January 2011 (EST)
Why won't Betancourt show up right? - --Mischa 12:02, 13 January 2011 (EST)
About halfway done with the cubanball.com list. It looks like they stopped updating it in December 2009. cubanballplayers.com was good for part of 2010 but is also down now. - --Mischa 12:15, 13 January 2011 (EST)
category rather than manually updated list?[edit]
Has any thought been given to adding a "Cuban defector" category, so this list could simply be auto-generated? From there, sub-lists of Cuban defectors who reach the majors and those who play only in the minors (and those who play neither) could be auto-generated off existing tags. That seems easier than managing this list manually. (At least 9-10 of the players still in the "Others" section are in the minors.) Then, when a player leaves Cuba, a new page could be created for him with the relevant tag(s), rather than adding a name to this list manually and constantly needing to re-classify them.
I know new contributors should be seen and not heard. Just tossing this out there, since it doesn't take long here to see that there's a lot of unnecessary manual work being done. Thanks.
It's always nice to hear from new contributors. As you can see, the suggestion was already raised once above but no one followed up on it. --Mischa 16:20, 27 July 2011 (EDT)
-- I figured categories were created at the admin level but maybe I was wrong about that. If I have a spare few hours, maybe this will be a project.
Getting harder to track as the pace of defection picks up - --Mischa (talk) 12:56, 12 January 2016 (EST)
I added a few to the list, but if anyone wants to beef up our article, we can borrow from a similar Wikipedia page: [1] Alexsautographs (talk) 16:59, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
Not clear if Omar Hernandez defected or if he simply went to live with his father in Cuba. - Mischa (talk) 02:04, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
I wonder if we should have a separate tag for people who return to Cuba as the list has been growing. I wonder if it's a recognition that the harsh penalties for trying to defect (ex. lifetime suspension for José Ibar) weren't deterring anyone and it would strengthen the Cuban league to let people return. - Mischa (talk) 16:42, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, a returned tag would be useful. As you say, the situation has evolved significantly since the list was first started. Philippe (talk) 16:50, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
When I was working on the Yusvani Bonne article, I found that she defected. No one reason to exclude female players who defected, right? She would still get the NT player indication, too? - Mischa (talk) 17:31, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
Also, since the NT players being in bold doesn't differentiate, those who played for the NT after defecting (like Robert and Moncada) should be labeled such too, right? - Mischa (talk) 00:38, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
Should players who played in both the majors and minors be in the minor league list. -User:Umbreon9talk/contribs 00:33, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
I think we were sticking with our general usage of categories, where MLB players don't get the minor league player tag as well. - Mischa (talk) 09:43, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
