Biographical Information[edit]
Steve Morales spent parts of three years in AAA but never made the major leagues.
Morales was picked by the Florida Marlins in the 23rd round of the 1996 amateur draft. He debuted with that year's GCL Marlins club, hitting .167/.231/.226 in 29 games and fielded well at catcher. In 1997, he batted .210/.282/.323 for the GCL Marlins.
Morales split 1998 between the Utica Blue Sox (.247/.283/.376 in 26 G) and the Portland Sea Dogs (3 for 10). In '99, he hit .271/.307/.385 for the Kane County Cougars as a backup to Matt Treanor. During 2000, the Mayaguez native hit .219/.302/.351 for Kane County and was 0 for 3 with the Calgary Cannons.
Steve split 2001 between the Brevard County Manatees (.248/.312/.369) and Calgary (1 for 2). He was in AA for all of 2002 with Portland, hitting .262/.295/.415, splitting catching with Treanor and Ryan Jorgensen.
In 2003, Morales moved to the Chicago White Sox system and produced at a .244/.287/.349 rate for the Birmingham Barons and .189/.211/.297 for the Charlotte Knights. His 14 games with Charlotte marked his longest stint in AAA.
Morales was in the San Diego Padres organization in 2004, hitting .224/.272/.359 for the Mobile BayBears. He then moved on to the independent leagues. In 2005, he batted .274/.307/.426 for the Coastal Bend Aviators. He remained with Coastal Bend for 2006 (.301/.332/.430) and 2007 (.293/.350/.437).
In the 2008 Americas Baseball Cup, Morales was 3 for 9 with a walk, 3 runs and a RBI as a backup catcher for Puerto Rico. They won the event and a spot in the 2009 Baseball World Cup; Morales remained with them for the World Cup.
Morales became a manager with the DSL Pirates 1 in 2019 and FCL Pirates Black in 2021. He was then development coach of the Altoona Curve in 2022.
