Biographical Information[edit]
Steve Carter was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 17th round of the 1987 amateur draft. He was shipped to the Watertown Pirates of the New York-Penn League and played 66 games, batting .310/.393/.393. His 50 runs scored tied Wes Chamberlain for team lead and his 24 steals were second on the squad. He tied Elio Jose for 5th in the league in batting average. 1988 was a busy year, playing with three different clubs, the Salem Buccaneers of the Class A Carolina League, the Harrisburg Senators of the AA Eastern League and the Augusta Pirates of the South Atlantic League. He hit .299/.368/.439 with 22 steals in 30 tries in 74 games for Augusta, was 6 for 21 with Salem and 10 for 35 with 7 runs scored in 9 games for Harrisburg. Had he qualified, he would have ranked 5th in the SAL in average.
Steve's performance earned him a shot in the bigs in 1989, playing 9 games and going 2-for-16 (.125) with a double, home run, 2 walks, 2 runs scored and 3 RBI. In his debut, he pinch-hit for Rafael Belliard and was intentionally walked by Pascual Perez to get to Doug Drabek (who left for a pinch-hitter as well), coming around to score on a Jose Lind hit. His lone big league homer was a 3-run shot off ex-Buc Don Robinson on April 30th. He spent most of the year with the Buffalo Bisons of the AAA American Association. He finished the year with Buffalo, hitting .295/~.345/.404 with 17 steals and 6 triples and playing an even 100 games. Had he qualified, he would have been 5th in the AA in average. He was with the Bisons again in 1990, hitting .303 in 120 games. Following this, the Pirates called him up, but he only played five games; his big league career ending on October 3rd.
Carter was traded to the Chicago Cubs for Gary Varsho on March 29, 1991, playing with the Iowa Cubs of the American Association. On December 10th, he was granted free agency and signed with the Detroit Tigers. That winter, he tied a Venezuelan League record with six hits in a game, matching the mark held by Guillermo Vento and Pete Koegel. Steve spent the 1992 season with the Toledo Mud Hens of the AAA International League, hitting an even .300 in 130 games. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds before the 1993 season. That put Carter back in the American Association for 68 games, where he hit .269 for the Indianapolis Indians. On July 12th, Cincinnati traded him to the Houston Astros for Jack Daugherty. Carter finished the season with the Tucson Toros of the AAA Pacific Coast League.
Carter played in Italy in 1994, hitting .431/.529/.684 for C.F.C Nettuno in Serie A1; he scored 64 runs with 54 RBI in 44 games and stole 10 bases in 11 tries. He hit .391 in the semifinals and .267/.542/.333 in the finals as Nettuno fell short. He led the league in runs scored, one ahead of Elio Gambuti, was .008 shy of batting champion Luis Martinez and was 4th in RBI (between Andres Thomas and Martinez). In 1995, he was back in the United States and played 24 games with the Charlotte Knights of the International League before retiring.
