Biographical Information[edit]

Andres Thomas played for the Atlanta Braves from 1985 to 1990. He took over from Rafael Ramirez as the Braves' starting shortstop in 1986 and kept the position until his final season, when he began sharing playing time with a young Jeff Blauser.

He was a free swinger, never drawing more than 14 walks in a season, even while getting 606 at-bats in 1988. He could not compensate for this basic flaw by either hitting for average - his career BA was .234 - or hitting for power - his career slugging percentage was just .334. He did cover a lot of ground, but was error-prone, and was not a particularly good baserunner either (his career high in stolen bases was 7, and he never scored more than 54 runs in a season). All of which made outside observers like Bill James wonder why the Braves would have a job for him year after year.
