Biographical Information

Steve Brown has played twelve seasons in the minor leagues (through 2015) and won one home run title.

Brown signed with the Houston Astros in December 2003. He hit .280 for the 2004 VSL Astros, then .298 with the same club in 2005. Coming to the USA, he batted .306/.344/.358 with the Greeneville Astros. He was 8th in the Appalachian League in average. He produced at a .276/.321/.331 rate for the 2007 Tri-City ValleyCats, then only .212/.277/.356 for the 2008 Lexington Legends though he had a 10 home runs and 15 steals. In 2009, Brown was with Lexington (.247/.298/.394) and the Lancaster JetHawks (6 for 30, 2 doubles, 3 homers, 10 strikeouts).

Leaving the affiliated minors, he hit .268/.340/.377 for the 2010 Edmonton Capitals with 17 steals in 25 tries. Brown was an outfielder with the Colombian national team in the 2010 Pan American Games Qualification Tournament, going 3 for 14 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI. In 2011, he hit .317/.410/.568 with 50 runs and 11 home runs in 50 games for Edmonton. Moving to Les Capitales de Québec for 2012, he batted .257/.334/.409 with 13 home runs and stole 29 bases in 34 tries. He tied Mike Richard for second in the Canadian-American Association in swipes (13 behind Bryan Sabatella and tied Ryan Scoma for 9th in home runs.

In the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, Brown went 4 for 11 with a home run (a two-run shot off Nicaragua's Uber Paz), three runs and three RBI. He was also plunked by Panama's Ramiro Mendoza, who was promptly ejected for the incident. He tied Donovan Solano and Edgar Renteria for the Colombian lead in runs, tied Giovanny Urshela and Solano for the RBI lead and was second to Solona in OPS among Colombia's regulars; the team failed to make it to the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

Brown switched to a third Canadian club for 2013, the Trois-Rivières Aigles. He had a strong season, hitting .288/.351/.516 with 19 home runs, 23 steals in 30 tries and 73 runs in 92 games. He led the league in dingers (3 more than Jeremy Barnes or Jon Smith), tied Jerod Edmondson and Donnie Webb for second in runs (3 behind Jonathan Malo), was 6th in steals (between Malo and Edmondson), was third in slugging (after Bridger Hunt and Barnes), tied for 5th with 24 doubles and was 7th in RBI. He joined Webb and Edmondson as the All-Star outfielders.

He produced at a .252/.338/.411 clip for the 2014 Aigles, tying Barnes and Edmonson for 7th in home runs (11), tied Malo and Jose Cuevas for 4th with 15 steals (he was caught six times) and was second with 101 whiffs (40 behind Joe Dunigan). He won Gold with Colombia in the 2015 South American Championship, their first South American Championship title. In the 2015 Pan American Games, he hit .278/.381/.611 as Colombia's starting center fielder. His two home runs tied Harold Ramírez for the team lead and he led the team in RBI (4), while placing second to Ramírez in OBP, slugging and OPS as a bright spot on a winless team. He tied for 8th in the Pan Ams in home runs.

For the Aigles in 2015, he hit .301/.389/.473 with 12 homers, 62 runs, 64 RBI and 23 steals (in 30 tries) in 90 games. He was 7th in the league in homers again, tied Mark Threlkeld for 7th in RBI, tied Stephen Cardullo and Chris Winder for 6th in steals and was 9th in slugging (between Jared McDonald and Charlie Law). In March 2016, he played for Colombia in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. Starting in center, he was only 1 for 12 with a walk, six whiffs and a RBI for the team's lowest OPS but Colombia still won the pool to get a spot in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, their first World Baseball Classic. His lone hit was off Richard Castillo in the opener against Spain. He slumped to .276/.348/.435 for the 2016 Aigles.

He was on Colombia's squad for the 2016 South American Championship, hitting .389/.455/.722 with 6 runs, 5 RBI and 3 steals in 5 games in the first round. He tied for 5th in hits, tied Ronald Luna and Federico Gómez for 7th in average, tied Diego Miyasato and Kenta Bani for third in steals and was 5th in slugging (between Felipe Burin and Lucas Montalbetti). He homered off Felipe Fukuda of the champion Brazilian national team. He was 0 for 3 in the semifinals in an upset loss to Argentina and sat out the Bronze Medal game, which Colombia won, but still made the tournament All-Star team in center field for his fine play in the round-robin phase.
