Biographical Information[edit]
Richard Castillo began his professional career in 2007 at 17 years old.
Castillo was signed by scout Gregorio Gonzalez for the St. Louis Cardinals at age 17. For the 2007 VSL Cardinals, he went 3-2 with two saves and a 1.72 ERA, third-best in the league. He allowed a .183 opponent average. He split 2008 between the Quad Cities River Bandits (8-4, 2.62) and the Palm Beach Cardinals (1-0, 1.13). He began 2009 back with Palm Beach and was put on Spain's preliminary roster for the 2009 Baseball World Cup. He did make the cut for Spain in the 2012 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers but did not pitch as they won a spot in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. In the 2013 WBC, he was Spain's top performer, though. He got the nod against his countrymates from Venezuela and shut out the star-stuffed offense for three innings, leaving with a 3-0 lead; Chris Manno and the bullpen could not hold on and Spain wound up losing its upset bid.
He played in the Cardinals system through 2013, reaching Triple A for the first time that year. In 2014, he pitched unsuccessfully in the Colorado Rockies system, going 3-12 with a 5.41 ERA at Double A. After playing just winter ball in 2015, he joined the independent ranks for 2016. He was back on the Spanish staff in the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers but struggled. Relieving Sergio Perez in the 5th with a 2-0 deficit, one on and one out, he intentionally walked Jesus Valdez and retired Adrian Sanchez. Mauricio Ramos and Steve Brownboth singled in runs then Castillo walked Luis Martinez; Antonio Noguera relieved and walked in one of the inherited runners to make it 5-0.
