Biographical Information

Simon Bäumer has played in the Bundesliga and for the German national team.

He debuted with the Hamburg Stealers in 2017, hitting .240/.269/.320 as a backup first baseman at age 15. In '18, he fell to .170/.241/.189 and went 3-3 with a save and a 4.82 ERA. Only Sascha Koch had more strikeouts by a pitcher under age 21 in the northern Bundesliga-1 that year. He hit .278/.387/.354 in 2019 and was 4-2 with a save and a 3.20 ERA. The 2020 season was shortened by COVID-19 and he allowed 8 runs in 6 innings while going 4-for-12 with two walks and two doubles.

Going to the US for college, he hit .292/.436/.444 in 2020-2021. He struck out 10 in 5 1/3 shutout innings against Italy in the 2021 U23 European Championship and was 3-for-15. He did well in limited time in the Bundesliga at .366/.481/.634 while going 2-1 with a save and a 3.18 ERA. His second season in the US, he batted .282/.420/.417.

Bäumer pitched two shutout innings in the 2022 U23 Baseball World Cup and was 1 for 12 with 3 walks. That summer in Hamburg, he hit .375/.455/.604 in limited action (due to his time in US college ball) and had 3 saves despite a 8.22 ERA. Among players with 50+ PA, he was among the leaders in average, slugging and OPS. He led the league in saves.

In Germany for all of 2023, he slumped to .240/.336/.298 but was 3-2 with a 2.28 ERA and 31 K in 23 2/3 IP. He allowed 3 runs in 2 2/3 IP in the 2023 U23 European Championship but hit .267/.333/.467, going yard off Mathis Nayral. That earned him a spot on Germany's squad for the 2023 European Championship. The 21-year-old started at first base and did a fine job. In their opener against Belgium, he doubled off Cedric Desmedt to score Shawn Larry with their first run of the tourney; he had three hits and three RBI that day. He produced at a .304/.467/.478 clip with 7 walks, 4 doubles and 5 RBI in 6 games while handling 56 chances error-free. In the Bronze Medal Game, his 4th-inning single off former major leaguer Shairon Martis scored Eric Brenk to give Germany an early lead against defending champion the Netherlands but they could not hold on. He tied Delano Selassa, Ray-Patrick Didder, Kostiantyn Chukhas, Sharlon Schoop and Dimitri Kourtis for third in the event in doubles, tied for 7th in walks (with Vito Friscia, Roger Bernadina, Nathanael Batista and Ty Kelly), tied Dmytro Limarenko and Harry Ford for second in putouts (54, 2 behind Martin Mužík) and was second to Ford in fielding (both at 1.000; Ford had three more chances).
