Biographical Information[edit]

Shervyen Newton has played in the minors and for the Dutch national team.

He was signed by New York Mets scouts Sendly Reina, Hector Rincones, Harold Herrera and Chris Becerra in July 2015. [1] He made his pro debut with the 2016 DSL Mets 2, hitting .170/.347/.229 with more hit-by-pitch (10) than RBI (5). He improved to .311/.433/.444 with the same team a year later, legging out 9 triples, drawing 50 walks in 66 games and scoring 51 times. He tied Julio Francisco for 4th in the Dominican Summer League in runs, tied Deury Carrasco and Anthony Rodriguez for 5th in walks, was 7th in OBP and tied for second in three-baggers, one behind Francisco. [2]

Newton came stateside in 2018 with the Kingsport Mets and posted a .270/.408/.449 line with 50 runs and 46 walks in 56 games, while fielding .961 at SS. He was second in the Appalachian League in runs (11 shy of Cal Stevenson) and was second in walks (7 behind Stevenson). He was not named the loop's All-Star shortstop, which went to Wander Franco. Baseball America rated him as the league's #11 prospect, between Josiah Gray and Alejandro Kirk. He slipped to .209/.283/.330, though, with the 2019 Columbia Fireflies.

After the 2020 minor league season was wiped out by COVID-19, he eked out a .190/.312/.293 line for the St. Lucie Mets. He split '22 between St. Lucie (.298/.375/.548 in 24 G) and the Brooklyn Cyclones (.199/.297/.330 in 96 G). He led South Atlantic League shortstops in fielding percentage (.962), putouts (118) and assists (232). [3] The Kansas City Royals took him in the AAA portion of the 2022 Rule V Draft. [4]

In 2023, he hit .222/.305/.432 with 15 homers as a utility infielder for the Quad Cities River Bandits. He tied for 5th among Royals farmhands in dingers. He then played for the Netherlands in the 2023 European Championship. He debuted in a 16-3 rout of Ukraine, batting for Delano Selassa and flying out against Dmytro Terekhin. He stayed in at 1B and singled his next time up against Terekhin. He finished the event 1-for-3 with two walks and a run, also pinch-hitting his other two games, once staying in at 3B after batting for Juremi Profar. The Dutch won Bronze. [5]

Newton bounced around in 2024, with an injury rehab stint; by mid-August, he had only played 42 games between three Royals farm clubs, hitting .181/.252/.329.
