Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Cal Stevenson was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 10th round of the 2018 amateur draft, out of the University of Arizona. He began his pro career that season by playing 59 games with the GCL Blue Jays and the Bluefield Blue Jays, hitting a combined .369/.511/.523. While he was a bit old and experienced for the level, it was a very solid first year. In 2019, he moved straight to Class A Advanced, skipping a level, playing in the Florida State League with the Dunedin Blue Jays. In spite of the significant increase in caliber, he continued to do very well, putting up a line of .298/.388/.393 in 90 games. While undersized and still a long way from the majors, he was now an intriguing player, so it was not surprising that the Houston Astros were interested in obtaining him at the trading deadline on July 31st, especially as they had had to move a number of prospects in other deals. What was surprising was that the Blue Jays were willing to make him basically a throw-in in an already lopsided deal in which they sent two experienced major league pitchers, Aaron Sanchez and Joe Biagini, and only received an aging OF prospect, Derek Fisher, in return. He was assigned to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers of the Carolina League where he hit .247 in 23 games the rest of the way.

On January 9, 2020, he was traded again, joining fellow prospect Peyton Battenfield in heading to the Tampa Bay Rays in return for P Austin Pruitt. On July 9, 2022, he was traded for the third time, this time to the Oakland Athletics along with P Christian Fernandez in return for C Christian Bethancourt. It was with Oakland that he made his major league debut on August 10th, going 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored in a 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels as the A's starting centerfielder and #9 hitter.
