Biographical Information[edit]
Sheng-Hsiung Huang has won a strikeout title in the Chinese Professional Baseball League.
Huang was on the La New Bears minor league team in 2009. [1] In the 2012 Haarlem Baseball Week, he was 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA. [2] He had a 6.75 ERA in the 2013 World Port Tournament. [3] He played for the Taiwanese national team when they won the Bronze at the 2013 East Asian Games and was picked by the EDA Rhinos in the first round of the 2013 CPBL Draft. He was the third overall pick, after Kai-Wen Cheng and Yu-Hsun Chen. [4]
The Taitung native was 9-7 with a save and a 4.23 ERA as a rookie. He led the 2014 CPBL with 119 strikeouts, 9 ahead of runner-up Andy Sisco, and tied Ken Ray and Yu-Ching Lin for 4th in wins. [5] He was the first Taiwanese native to lead the CPBL in strikeouts since Fu-Te Ni in 2008. He was selected into the 2014 CPBL All-Star Game, but he allowed 2 runs in 2 innings. Huang slumped in 2015, going 3-7 with two saves and a 4.99 ERA while moving more to relief. A full-time reliever in 2016, he was 1-4 with 8 saves and a 4.91 ERA. He was 7th in games pitched (47, between Po-Yu Lin and Hua-Wei Lo) and tied Ni for third in saves. [6] In the 2016 Taiwan Series, he saved game 6's win over the Chinatrust Brothers to give the Rhinos the Taiwan Series title. He didn't allow any runs in 4 1/3 innings in 5 appearances while collecting 2 holds. As the team was sold and became the Fubon Guardians, he had thus saved the last game in EDA's history as well as clinching their first and only Taiwan Series. [7]
Huang was Taiwan's top hurler in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. He relieved Wei-Lun Pan in the 5th with a 8-5 deficit against host South Korea. He struck out Hyung-woo Choi, allowed a Jae-ho Kim single, whiffed Geon-chang Seo, plunked Byung-hun Min and got Yong-kyu Lee on a fly. In the 6th, he struck out Seok-min Park and hit Dae-ho Lee before being relieved by Chen-Hua Lin. [8] He finished with Taiwan's best WHIP of the tournament (though if you add in HBP, his baserunners per innign would have gone up a fair bit) and was one of only three hurlers for the team who did not allow a run. However, Huang suffered from elbow injury, so he only pitched 25 games with a 8.27 ERA in 2017. What's worse, he was accused of domestic violence after this season. Huang was released immediately, and his professional career ended.
He throws a fastball (peak 95.6 mph), slider, changeup and sinker. [9]
Overall, Huang was 13-21 with a 4.94 ERA, struck out 220 and pitched 268 innings in 5 seasons in the CPBL.
