Biographical Information[edit]

Sang-ryul Chun played in the Korea Baseball Organization for 16 years.

Chun was signed by the Samsung Lions in 1991, but he suffered from shoulder injuries, so he didn't get many chances. He only played 63 games with the big club before the Lions released him in 1996, and the Hanwha Eagles picked him up. Chun hit .236/.302/.342 in 116 games with 21 steals in 1997, and he played 61 games with a .218/.238/.299 batting line in 1998. The Eagles then traded him with Won-ki Hong to the Doosan Bears for Kyeong-won Kim, and he hit .231/.275/.446 with 3 homers in 1999. Chun recorded a .235/.303/.259 batting line in 2000, then he batted .267/.346/.346 in 2001.

The Daegu native get a starting spot in outfield in 2002, and he hit .246/.292/.362 with 10 steals. He improved to .262/.336/.329 in 2003, and he also represented South Korea in the 2003 Baseball World Cup. He batted .303/.368/.394 and played error-free ball in CF (13 PO, A). Chun extended his solid performance in 2004, and he hit .274/.329/.350 with 15 steals. His batting line was .241/.316/.306 in 2005, and he won the MVP of the 2005 KBO Playoff Series; the Bears were swept by the Samsung Lions. Chun slumped to .188/.238/.240 in 2006, and he struggled again in 2007 as he only recorded a .186/.271/.244 batting line. He hit .197/.269/.268 in 2008, then he announced his retirement. Chun was the fielding coach of the Bears in 2014, and he coached their minor league team from 2015 to 2017. Chun coached the minor league team of the Eagles from 2018 to 2019, and he managed them in 2020. He was the baserunning coach of the Eagles from 2021 to 2023, and he moved to the NC Dinos in 2024.

Overall, Chun hit .243/.306/.323 with 640 hits and 23 homers in 16 seasons in the KBO.
