Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Ruben Escalera played ten seasons in the minor leagues for the Milwaukee Brewers (1985-1991), Cincinnati Reds (1992) and three different Mexican League teams (1993-1994). In 1991, he was 5th in the Texas League with a .316 average and made the TL All-Star outfield alongside Steve Hosey and Shon Ashley. He scored 101 runs that year. Good at getting on base, Escalera lacked power, never hitting more than 7 homers for any team.
In 1995, he became a scout with the Oakland Athletics and continued scouting for many years, even while serving as a coach and manager. Escalera coached hitters for the AZL Athletics from 1996-2001 and then was promoted to manager. In 2005, he was named Arizona League Manager of the Year. In 2008 he also served as Special Instructor for Scouting and Player Development, a role that became his full-time job in 2009 and possibly in 2010-2011 as well. Escalera managed the DSL Athletics during the 2012-2013 seasons before returning stateside to manage the AZL Athletics again in 2014-2015. Since then Escalera has worked as the hitting coach for the AZL A's in 2016-2018, AZL Athletics Green in 2019, and ACL Athletics in 2021-2022. The A's finally moved him out of rookie ball as an assistant hitting coach for the Stockton Ports in 2023 and Lansing Lugnuts in 2024.
In addition to coaching in the Oakland organization, Escalera served as a coach, manager, and general manager in the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League for many years. He was a coach for the Senadores de San Juan "Dream Team" in 1994/1995, a team loaded with stars like Roberto Alomar, Carlos Delgado, and Edgar Martinez. Escalera coached the Indios de Mayaguez in 2006/2007 and 2007/2008. He managed the final Senadores team in 2014/2015 while simultaneously serving as the team's general manager. Escalera continued as a general manager with the Cangrejeros de Santurce from 2015/2016 through the 2021/2022 season. He returned to coaching in 2022/2023 as the hitting coach for the Gigantes de Carolina.
