Biographical Information[edit]

Rio Gomez pitched in the minor leagues and CPBL and for the Colombian national team. His father is baseball journalist Pedro Gomez.

Gomez was 2-0 with a 0.86 ERA for the University of Arizona in 2015 and 3-0 with a 4.32 ERA in '16. He was 1-1 with a 3.98 ERA for the Cotuit Kettleers in that summer's Cape Cod League. He was 5-6 with a 4.82 ERA for Arizona during 2017. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 36rd round of the 2017 amateur draft; the scout was Vaughn Williams.

He had a 1.98 ERA in 13 games for the GCL Red Sox. He also pitched 3 games for the Lowell Spinners, but he allowed 6 runs in 5 innings. He did not allow a homer that summer. Gomez had a 1.65 ERA in 11 games for the Spinners in 2018 (walking only 4 in 27 1/3 IP), then he recorded a 3.24 ERA in 7 games with the Greenville Drive. He split his 2019 season between Greenville and Salem Red Sox, and he had a 1.09 ERA in 14 games with the Drive while pitching 25 games with a 2.80 ERA in Salem. Gomez missed the 2020 season due to the coronavirus canceling the minor league season.

In 2021, Gomez mainly stayed with AA Portland Sea Dogs and he had a 3.43 ERA in 26 relief outings. He then had a 6.55 ERA in 24 games for the Sea Dogs in 2022, and he made it onto Colombia's roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic (his mother's family was Colombian). Gomez relieved Jhon Romero in the 6th inning against Team Canada, and retired Abraham Toro and Bo Naylor. Owen Caissie then drew a walk, and Gomez fanned Jacob Robson to end this inning. He then struck out Edouard Julien, and Pedro Garcia replaced him. Gomez was turned into a starter in 2023, and he was 2-2 with a 6.41 ERA for the Sea Dogs. He also went 0-3 with a 4.45 ERA with the AAA Worcester Red Sox. Gomez then pitched for the Estrellas Orientales of the Dominican Winter League, and he had a 3.24 ERA in 3 starts there.

The Wei Chuan Dragons of the CPBL signed him in 2024, and he debuted on March 30 in the first CPBL game which took place in the Taipei Dome. Gomez relieved Jo-Hsi Hsu in the 6th inning, and he allowed 2 runs in 2 1/3 innings to get a hold.
