Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Owen Caissie was one of only three players from outside the United States to be selected in the curtailed 2020 amateur draft. He was taken in the 2nd round by the Chicago Cubs, out of a high school in his hometown of Burlington, ON. The COVID-19 pandemic had led to the draft being limited to just five rounds, and U.S. college players were by far the most likely to be selected, along with some blue chip high school seniors. Caissie fell into that category thanks to having played for the Canadian junior national team, although not in any major competition, and having attracted scouts' attention as a result, in spite of being largely inactive in 2020. Of the five Canadian-born players taken that year, only two others were high schoolers, the other two coming from large U.S.-based college programs.
He began his professional career in 2021 with the ACL Cubs and finished the season with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Low-A East, as the circuit was called that year only. Altogether, his batting line was .302/.434/.489 in 54 games, with 11 doubles, 7 homers and 29 RBIs. In 2022, he played 105 games for the South Bend Cubs of the Midwest League and hit .254/.349/.402 with 21 doubles, 11 homers, 57 runs and 58 RBIs. After the season, he appeared in the Arizona Fall League.
Before the 2023 season, he was named a member of the Canadian national team for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He was the youngest position player on the team, with only pitcher Mitch Bratt being born after him.
