Laney College originally opened as Oakland City College.
It is located in downtown Oakland, CA, part of the Peralta Community College District that operates four area junior colleges. The school was involved in the Oakland Athletics' search for a site to build a new downtown ballpark, as the team's preference was for a 13-acre property owned by the District next to the college. However, due to objections from staff and users of the college, the District's Board of Directors ordered an end to talks with the team in late 2017, taking the property off the board as a potential building site.
