Biographical information[edit]
Gary Alexander was a minor league first baseman who played from 1987 to 1993 in the Texas Rangers and Philadelphia Phillies organizations. He is not to be confused with the major league Gary Alexander, although coincidentally they both have the same middle name (Wayne).
Alexander was drafted six times. He was first taken by the California Angels in the 5th round of the Regular Phase of the 1984 MLB January Draft, but did not sign. He was then taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2nd round of the Secondary Phase of the 1984 MLB June Draft, then by the Texas Rangers in the 2nd round of the Secondary Phase of the 1985 MLB January Draft, then by the Detroit Tigers in the 5th round of the Secondary Phase of the 1985 MLB June Draft, then by the Seattle Mariners in the 3rd round of the Secondary Phase of the 1986 MLB June Draft, but still he would not sign. He finally inked a contract after being taken by the Rangers in the 8th round of the regular 1987 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Rick Schroeder.
He began his professional career that year, splitting the season between the Gastonia Rangers and Tulsa Drillers. He hit a combined .289 with nine home runs in 73 games.
He played for Tulsa in 1988, hitting .265 with 17 home runs and 78 RBI in 132 games (464 at-bats). In 1989 with the Drillers, he hit .232 with 15 home runs and 64 RBI in 131 games (466 at-bats). Interestingly, he stole nine bases in 1989, after stealing zero in 1988. He also posted a 2.25 ERA in three relief appearances in 1989.
He wound up in the Phillies organization in 1990. With the Reading Phillies that year, he hit .255 with 19 home runs and 60 RBI. He played for the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons in 1991 and 1992, hitting .239 with 17 home runs and 43 RBI in the former year and .202 with 12 home runs and 53 RBI in the latter. He played for the Saraperos de Saltillo of the Mexican League in 1993.
