Biographical Information[edit]
Steve Howard was an Oakland, CA native who played 21 games for the Oakland Athletics in 1990, a team that won the American League pennant. His batting line of .231/.286/.308 was not terrible given that it was his first (and only) stint in the majors. If he had played for a worse team, he might have been given more time, but as it was he was competing for playing time with regulars Rickey Henderson, Dave Henderson and Jose Canseco. His stay in the majors lasted only a month.
Steve attended Castlemont High School in Oakland, which is also where Hall of Famer Joe Morgan went to school. He was at Laney College, also in Oakland, and was drafted in the 8th round of the January 1983 Amateur Draft. Steve did everything in the minors except hit for average - he drew lots of walks, stole bases well, and had moderate power. While stats are not complete, it is likely he played a lot of center field.
He was put on the 40-man roster for the 1990 season, but because of collective bargaining issues, the major league teams locked out their players during spring training, thus preventing Steve and other hopeful major leaguers from getting playing time (see 1990 strike). [1] Eventually, though, he did appear in the big leagues that year, from the middle of June to the middle of July. Most of that year was spent with the Tacoma Tigers.
