Biographical Information[edit]

Masayoshi Nakayama pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 6 years.

Nakayama was signed by the Nagoya Kinko team when they were founded in 1937, and he shut out the Dai Tokyo club with 11 strikeouts in his debut on April 5. He was 5-7 with a 3.25 ERA in spring season, and he went 7-9 with a 4.14 ERA in the fall season. Nakayama improved to 8-7 with a 2.86 ERA in the 1938 spring season, ranking 5th in wins (tied with Saburo Asaoka), 6th in strikeouts (between Kozo Matsuo and Hisashi Kondo) and 8th in ERA (between Tetsuharu Kawakami and Asaoka) in the JPBL. He then went 6-13 with a 3.60 ERA in the fall season, leading the league in losses and ranking 5th in strikeouts (between Matsuo and Bikichi Miyaguchi).

The Ehime native was 25-21 with a 2.04 ERA in 1939, and he was 5th in ERA (between Victor Starffin and Jiro Noguchi). He was also 4th in wins (between Tadashi Wakabayashi and Masao Nakamoto), 3rd in complete games (30, tied with Tadashi Kameda) and 4th in strikeouts (between Kameda and Yoshio Kikuya). Nakayama set the NPB record with 29 losses in 1940, and that is still the NPB as of 2023. He went 18-29 with a 2.86 ERA in that season, and he also led the league in appearances, hits and runs allowed. he walks 13 in a game On May 12, and he set the JPBL record. Nakayama only pitched 5 games in 1941, then he was enlisted into the military. After missing professional baseball for 9 years, the newly-founded Hiroshima Carp contacted him and he signed with them. However, Nakayama's ERA was 7.65 in 20 games in 1950, and he announced his retirement again.

Overall, Nakayama was 72-97 with a 3.07 ERA, struck out 640 and pitched 1,292 innings in 6 years in NPB.
