Biographical Information[edit]

Kozo Matsuo pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 10 years.

Matsuo was signed by the Nagoya Kinko in 1937, and he was 3-6 with a 3.56 ERA in the fall season. He went 3-8 with a 3.79 ERA in the 1938 spring season, and he was 12-8 with a 2.93 ERA in the fall season. Matsuo led the JPBL in appearances, hits and runs allowed, ranking 2nd in wins (7 behind Victor Starffin) and 4th in strikeouts (between Yoshio Kikuya and Masayoshi Nakayama). Matsuo then went 8-13 with a 2.56 ERA in 1939, and he was 9th in strikeouts (between Kuranosuke Furuya and Tadashi Wakabayashi).

The Kyoto native went 13-13 with a 1.68 ERA in 1940, and he was 8th in ERA (between Saburo Asaoka and Mitsuhiko Ishida). Matsuo slumped to 0-6 with a 4.68 ERA in 1941, and he was 4-3 with a 2.87 ERA in 1942. He only pitched 6 games combined in the next two seasons before he was enlisted into the military in 1944, and he had a 3-16 record with a 5.65 ERA in 1946. Matsuo was 6th in losses in 1946, tied with Mitsuhiko Ishida and Takashi Eda. He had a 3.43 ERA in 7 starts in 1947, then he announced his retirement.

Overall, Matsuo was 48-77 with a 3.25 ERA, struck out 481 and pitched 1,106 innings in 10 years in NPB.
