Biographical Information[edit]

Saburo Asaoka pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 7 years.

Asaoka was signed by the Tokyo Senators when they were founded in 1936, and he was 2-0 with a 3.10 ERA in the spring season in 1936. He went 3-1 with a 3.88 ERA in the fall season, and he was 5-12 with a 4.24 ERA in 1937 spring season. Asaoka tied Kazuaki Otomo for 3rd in losses in 1937 spring. He then went 3-8 with a 3.65 ERA in the fall season, and he was 8-9 with a 2.93 ERA in 1938 spring season. Asaoka had a 7-5 record with a 3.60 ERA in the fall season, and he went 9-8 with a 1.31 ERA in 1939.

The Osaka native was 14-9 with a 1.66 ERA in 1940, and he was 7th in the Japanese Professional Baseball League in ERA (between Katsusaburo Asano and Kozo Matsuo). Asaoka then jumped to the Taiyo club in 1941, and he led the league with 7 homers allowed. He had a 11-6 record with a 1.60 ERA, and he ranked 10th in ERA (between Takeo Kanda and Takao Fujimura). Asaoka was used as a two-way player in 1941, and he hit .229/.354/.229 in 85 games. He slumped to .198/.281/.243 in 1942, and he only pitched 4 games in that season. He was then enlisted into the military, and his professional career ended.

Overall, Asaoka was 63-58 with a 2.46 ERA, struck out 405 and pitched 1,255 1/3 innings in 7 years in NPB. He hit .198/.301/.254 with 225 hits as a batter.
