Biographical Information

Mark Germann reached AAA as an infielder then went into scouting.

Germann was taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the 22nd round of the 1984 amateur draft. He made his pro debut starting at 2B for the Billings Mustangs that summer; he hit .292/.352/.382 with 44 runs in 61 games and fielded .967 at the keystone. He led Pioneer League second basemen in fielding percentage. In the high-offense Billings environment, his .292 average was last among his team's starters (the team hit .306), though well ahead of the team's lone future big leaguer, Chris Jones.

The next year, Mark was starting at shortstop for the Tampa Tarpons, producing at a .266/.350/.317 clip with 6 triples and 13 steals in 16 tries. In 1986, he hit .267/.340/.329 with 55 walks for the Cedar Rapids Reds, fielding .954 at short. During '87, Germann struggled offensively (.221/.308/.261) in a part-time role for the Vermont Reds. In 1988, he was a utility infielder, backing up Eddie Vargas at 1B, Angelo Nunley at 2B, Jeff Richardson at SS and Keith Lockhart at 3B for the Chattanooga Lookouts; he hit .269/.380/.303 with a team-high 63 walks. He ended his playing career in 1989 as a utility man for the Lookouts (.246/.312/.347 in 100 G) and the Nashville Sounds (1 for 15, 3 BB).

For his playing career, Germann's batting line was .260/.342/.322 with 21 triples, 35 steals in 52 tries, 250 walks, 257 runs and 186 RBI in 607 games. He fielded .961 in 367 games at SS, .976 in 108 at 2B, .925 in 52 at 3B and .982 in 24 at 1B. He later scouted for the Cleveland Indians (1991- ), Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies, signing Adam Boeve, Tom Gorzelanny, T.J. Oakes and Rob Scahill.
