Biographical Information[edit]
Marcelo Parker has pitched for the Salvadoran national team.
His uncle Ricardo Barba played for the Salvadoran national team as well, but it is unclear if he appeared in a major tournament and meets our notability criteria. [1] He had a 5.14 ERA for St. John's River in 2015. [2] Transferring to Saint Leo, he allowed one unearned run in 4 1/3 IP over two years. [3] He was one of the first Salvadorans to play college ball in the US. [4]
Parker started for the first game for El Salvador in a Bolivarian Games, at the 2017 Bolivarian Games. Facing powerhouse Colombia, he shut them out for four innings before falling to the Gold Medalists. He did strike out MLB-bound Jorge Alfaro twice. [5] He also started in the Bronze Medal Game, losing to Pedro Guerra and Venezuela. He finished the event with a 4.50 ERA and 0-2 record. He tied Andy Otero for the most losses in the tournament but his 4.50 ERA matched the team mean despite facing two tough opponents. He tied William Ponce for second on the staff with 8 IP, 1/3 behind Héctor Martínez. [6]
The next month, he got El Salvador's first win in the 2017 Central American Games, holding Costa Rica to four hits, a walk and two runs (one earned) in five innings, fanning three to beat Rubén Rojas. Jhonny Bautista saved the game for him. In the round-robin phase, only Batista and Ponce had better ERAs for El Salvador. He squared off against Alejandro Amezquita of Guatemala in his second Bronze Medal Game start in two months. He allowed a leadoff homer to former O's farmhand Fabián Vizcaíno then struck out another ex-O's minor leaguer, Andrés Aguilar. He walked Manuel Hernández, struck out Pablo Custodio, retired Marco Lemus, gave up a hit to José Vera, then retired Juan Montes and Fernando Ozuna. At some point, one of the baserunners was eliminated (not listed as a caught stealing, no double plays listed - perhaps a pick-off?) It was 1-0 after 1 1/2 innings when rain wiped out the rest of the game, both teams being given Bronze Medals. [7]
In the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games Central American Qualifier, he played second, third, DH and pitcher, going 1-for-10 with two walks and posting a 5.79 ERA in two outings. He got his hit off Amezquita. [8] El Salvador had already qualified for the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games as host; they were using the event as a warm-up.
