Biographical Information

Pitcher Andy Otero spent six seasons in the minors and has played for the Panamanian national team.

He was signed by Atlanta Braves scout Luis Ortiz in 2009 and dominated for the DSL Braves at 6-1, 0.84 with 93 K in 64 IP. He had a 1.00 WHIP. He was third in the Dominican Summer League in ERA, behind Pedro Guerra and Randol Rojas and was second to Felix Cespedes in ERA. He missed all of 2010 with an elbow strain. He only pitched four games for the 2011 GCL Braves (0-1, 8.18) before again winding up on the DL. 2012 saw even less action - 3 shutout innings. In 2013, he pitched for the GCL Braves (2-1, Sv, 4.24 in 9 G) and Danville Braves (1 UER in 14 2/3 IP, 2-0).

He was 4-1 with 3 saves and a 3.60 ERA for the 2014 Rome Braves, whiffing 60 in 55 innings. After going 1-5 with three saves and a 2.58 ERA in 34 appearances with the Carolina Mudcats in 2015, he was released. He had a 2.53 ERA in 103 minor league games but had missed too much action to injury. In the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he relieved Alberto Acosta with a 7-4 lead over France in the bottom of the 8th. He retired Andy Paz on a grounder, gave up a single to Jorge Hereaud, then got both Ernesto Martínez Jr. and Douglas Rodriguez to end the inning. In the 9th, he was replaced by Manny Corpas to close out the win.

In the 2017 Bolivarian Games, the 25-year-old started against host Colombia and battled Randy Consuegra in a pitching duel; he allowed one run in 5 2/3 IP despite 6 walks (4 H, 5 K), giving up a 5th-inning sacrifice fly to Adrián Sánchez to break a scoreless game open. Acosta took over and Panama lost, 2-0. The performance must have impressed manager Rodrigo Merón enough as he went to Otero again in the Gold Medal Game, again facing Colombia. This time, he faced off against Karl Triana and led 3-1 after 3 1/2 but did not last out the 4th, being charged with 3 more runs, and Jean Corpas took over with two outs. He finished with 5 hits, 2 walks, 2 whiffs and 4 runs in 3 2/3 IP to take the loss in a 6-4 game.
