Biographical Information

Maicer Izturis was signed by scout Luis Aponte for the Cleveland Indians in 1998. He made his pro debut with the Burlington (NC) Indians that summer.

In 2004, Izturis was traded by the Indians with Ryan Church to the Montreal Expos for Scott Stewart. He made his major league debut with the Expos in late August of 2004, hitting .206 in 32 games. The Expos had traded long-time shortstop Orlando Cabrera and decided to let go his replacement, Alex Gonzalez, before the end of the year, making Maicer the starter at shortstop for most of the team's final month in Montreal. After the season, he was sent with Juan Rivera to the Anaheim Angels for Jose Guillen.

Maicer was limited to 11 games with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014 after he tore ligaments in his left knee. He returned in spring training in 2015 and seemed to have won the starting second base job, but he strained his groin in a Grapefruit League game and missed the start of the season. He was on a rehabilitation assignment with the Dunedin Blue Jays on May 23rd when he suffered another setback, suffering a tear in his right shoulder while diving for a ball. He underwent surgery and did not play again that year. He returned to the Blue Jays as a non-roster invitee in 2016, but on March 4th he announced his retirement, explaining that his body was no longer up to the strains of playing major league baseball. His retirement left Bartolo Colon the last remaining active former member of the Expos.

Izturis is the half-brother of Cesar Izturis; they do not share the same mother (source: Dodgers broadcast). His nephew César Izturis Jr. has played in pro ball as well.
