Biographical Information[edit]

Lung-Wei Kao pitched in the CPBL for 9 years.

Kao was signed by the Sinon Bulls in 1999 , but he had a terrible 6.45 ERA in 17 games, then the Bulls released him. The Uni-President Lions picked him up, and Kao had a 5.64 ERA in 21 appearances in 2000. In the 2000 Taiwan Series, he allowed a run in 3 1/3 innings in Game 2, then he pitched a shutout inning in Game 3. Relieving Maximo De La Rosa in Game 6, Kao pitched 3 1/3 innings with a run allowed, but Osvaldo Martínez got the win over him. The Lions still beat the Sinon Bulls in 7 games, and Kao won his first Taiwan Series title.

The Taitung native improved to 3-5 with a 4.81 ERA in 2001, and he also started a career-high 14 games. He allowed 2 runs in 1 1/3 innings in 2001 Taiwan Series Game 1, and he relieved Yi-Cheng Tseng in the 3rd inning of Game 3. Kao pitched 7 innings with 5 strikeouts, only giving up 2 runs to got the win over Shih-Kai Chang. He pitched 3 1/3 innings with 2 runs allowed, and the Brother Elephants beat the Lions in 7 games. Kao struggled in 2002, and he bounced back in 2003. He had a solid 3.42 ERA in 51 appearances, and he ranked 3rd in appearances (3 behind Wen-Hsiung Hsu).

Kao had a 4.02 ERA in 48 games in 2004, and he was 6th in appearances (tied with Chao-Huang Lin). He pitched a shutout inning combined between 2004 Taiwan Series Game 1 and 2, then he surrendered a 2-run shot to Chung-Yi Huang in the 7th inning of Game 3. The Bulls beat the Lions in 7 games. Kao had a 3.12 ERA in 25 games in 2005, but he suffered from a right shoulder injury, so he missed the entire 2006 season. He pitched 22 games while allowing 25 runs in 2007, and he announced his retirement in 2008. Kao then started to coach Taitung Physical Education High School in 2012.

Kao's repertoire included a fastball (peak 90.1 mph), knuckle curve and forkball.

Overall, Kao was 15-20 with a 5.06 ERA, struck out 298 and pitched 455 innings in 9 seasons in the CPBL.
