Biographical Information

Pitcher Luis Ortiz was taken 30th overall by the Texas Rangers in the 2014 amateur draft. His signing bonus was $1.75 million; the scout was Butch Metzger.

The 18-year-old was 1-1 with a 1.77 ERA in 20 1/3 innings between the AZL Rangers and Hickory Crawdads in 2014 and, after being ranked the #9 prospect in the Rangers system by Baseball America going into the campaign, went 4-1 with a 2.16 ERA in 13 starts for Hickory in 2015. He walked only 9 batters in 50 innings of work and was a South Atlantic League Mid-Season All-Star. BA ranked him the #64 prospect in all of baseball, and the #4 prospect in the Rangers chain, going into 2016. That season, he started the year with the High Desert Mavericks of the California League, going 3-2, 2.60 in 7 games, then was promoted to the Frisco Rough Riders of the Texas League. He found the going there a bit rougher, going 1-4, 4.08 in 9 games then on August 1st, he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, alongside fellow prospect Lewis Brinson, in return for veteran major leaguers Jonathan Lucroy and Jeremy Jeffress. He went 2-2, 1.93 in 6 starts for the Biloxi Shuckers of the Southern League after the trade. In 2017, he returned to Biloxi where in 22 games, he was 4-7, 4.01, pitching 94 1/3 innings.

He was named to the United States team for the 2018 Futures Game. Two weeks after the game, on July 31st, he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles along with Jean Carmona and Jonathan Villar in return for 2B Jonathan Schoop. He was 3-4, 3.71 in 16 games in his third go-round with Biloxi at the time of the trade. On September 7th, he made his debut with the Orioles, giving up 3 runs in two-thirds of an inning in relief in a 14-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

He is not to be confused with another pitcher named Luis Ortiz whose middle name is Leandro and who made his major league debut in 2022; he is sometimes called "Luis F. Ortiz" to differentiate the two.
