The Las Vegas native missed most of 2007 with a right elbow injury, going 1-0 with two saves and a 1.50 ERA in 9 regular-season outings for the Visalia Oaks and tossing a shutout inning in the postseason. The next summer, he went 4-3 with 16 saves, a 2.69 ERA, 86 strikeouts in 67 innings and a .199 opponent average for Visalia. He was second in the California League in lowest average allowed by a reliever and K/9 IP while tying Dan Otero for 4th in saves. He was second in the Arizona chain in saves, behind Reid Mahon.
He was less effective in 2009 as he moved up to the Mobile Bay Bears, going 2-3 with 4 saves, a 3.99 ERA and .265 opponent average while striking out only 48 in 65 1/3 IP. He went 4-3 with a 3.45 ERA for Mobile in 2010, fanning 104 in 88 2/3 innings. He lost his only playoff outing (3 R in 4 IP). He excelled for the Leones de Ponce in the Puerto Rican Winter League, going 4-2 with a 1.55 ERA and no home runs in 46 1/3 IP. In the 2011 Caribbean Series, he allowed one run in five innings in a no-decision against the Toros del Este.
Newby split 2011 between the Bay Bears (8-2, Sv, 3.87) and Reno Aces (2-3, 5.03). He tied Zach Kroenke for 4th in the Arizona minor league system in wins. In the postseason, he gave up three runs in three innings. He fell to 1-1, 4.15 for Ponce and the Gigantes de Carolina in a second winter in Puerto Rico. A free agent, he signed with the Baltimore Orioles. In 2012, he appeared for the Bowie BaySox (5-4, 19 Sv, 2.44, 74 K in 55 1/3 IP) and Norfolk Tides (Sv, 0 R in 1 IP).
