Biographical Information[edit]

Kyler Newby has spent several seasons in AAA.

Newby was picked by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 50th round of the 2004 amateur draft as a draft-and-follow; Steve Kmetko was the scout. He was 1-0 with two saves and a 2.18 ERA for the Yakima Bears in 2005, with a WHIP under 1.00, an opponent average of .172 and 66 strikeouts in 41 1/3 IP, the second-best K rate of Northwest League relievers. He tied Brent Carter for 8th in the NWL as a whole in whiffs despite not getting a single start. In 2006, he was 6-1 with 11 saves, a 2.05 ERA, .151 opponent average and 64 strikeouts in 44 innings for the South Bend Silver Hawks. He was second among Midwest League relievers in opponent average. He spent the fall with the West Oahu CaneFires, going 0-1 with a save and a 2.95 ERA.

The Las Vegas native missed most of 2007 with a right elbow injury, going 1-0 with two saves and a 1.50 ERA in 9 regular-season outings for the Visalia Oaks and tossing a shutout inning in the postseason. The next summer, he went 4-3 with 16 saves, a 2.69 ERA, 86 strikeouts in 67 innings and a .199 opponent average for Visalia. He was second in the California League in lowest average allowed by a reliever and K/9 IP while tying Dan Otero for 4th in saves. He was second in the Arizona chain in saves, behind Reid Mahon.

He was less effective in 2009 as he moved up to the Mobile Bay Bears, going 2-3 with 4 saves, a 3.99 ERA and .265 opponent average while striking out only 48 in 65 1/3 IP. He went 4-3 with a 3.45 ERA for Mobile in 2010, fanning 104 in 88 2/3 innings. He lost his only playoff outing (3 R in 4 IP). He excelled for the Leones de Ponce in the Puerto Rican Winter League, going 4-2 with a 1.55 ERA and no home runs in 46 1/3 IP. He led the league in ERA by .38 over Graham Godfrey, his 45 strikeouts were second to Mario Santiago and he tied Shota Oba for third in wins behind Sho Iwasaki and Santiago. In the 2011 Caribbean Series, he allowed one run in five innings in a no-decision against the Toros del Este.

Newby split 2011 between the Bay Bears (8-2, Sv, 3.87) and Reno Aces (2-3, 5.03). He tied Zach Kroenke for 4th in the Arizona minor league system in wins. In the postseason, he gave up three runs in three innings. He fell to 1-1, 4.15 for Ponce and the Gigantes de Carolina in a second winter in Puerto Rico. A free agent, he signed with the Baltimore Orioles. In 2012, he appeared for the Bowie BaySox (5-4, 19 Sv, 2.44, 74 K in 55 1/3 IP) and Norfolk Tides (Sv, 0 R in 1 IP). He saved two playoff games for Bowie. He led Orioles farmhands in saves (3 ahead of Greg Burke) and was third in the Eastern League behind Justin Friend and Preston Guilmet. In his third different winter league, following Hawaii and Puerto Rico, he was 0-3 with a 3.48 ERA and .211 opponent average for the Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican League in 2012-2013. He tied for third in the league in losses, one behind Randall Delgado and Lisalverto Bonilla.

Kyler next signed with the Oakland A's. He began 2013 well with the Midland RockHounds (4-4, 6 Sv, 1.95 in 23 G), earning a promotion to the AAA Sacramento RiverCats.
