Biographical Information

Dan Otero made his major league debut with the San Francisco Giants in 2012.

Amateur Career

Otero was 5-5 with a 1.07 ERA as a high school sophomore, 5-5 with a 1.94 ERA as a junior and 6-4 with a 1.40 ERA as a senior (82 K, 3 BB in 65 IP). He was third-team All-State as a senior. As a college freshman at Duke, he was 2-4 with four saves and a 4.38 ERA. His sophomore year, he had a 5-11, 5.80 record. He led the Atlantic Coast Conference in losses and lowest walk rate (8 in 61 2/3 IP). As a junior, he improved to 5-4, 2.20 with 6 walks in 73 2/3 innings. The Miami native again had the lowest walk rate in the ACC. Transferring to South Florida for his senior year, 2007, he went 9-7 with a 3.32 ERA in 122 innings. He tied for third in the Big East Conference in wins, tied for first in complete games (5), led in innings, led in hits allowed (132) and was 5th in whiffs.

Minor League Career

The San Francisco Giants took Otero in the 21st round of the 2007 amateur draft. The scout was Glenn Tufts. He had a splendid pro debut with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, saving 19 games in 22 outings and allowing only 3 runs, 12 hits and no walks in 22 1/3 innings. He led the Northwest League in saves. MILB.com named him the Class A Reliever of the Year. In 2008, he starred for the Augusta Greenjackets (18 Sv, 1 R in 27 IP) and the San Jose Giants (1-1, 16 Sv, 3.67). He was 6th in the South Atlantic League in saves and tied Kyler Newby for 4th in the California League. He was one save behind Jon Link for the most in the affiliated minors.

With the 2009 Connecticut Defenders, Otero was 0-3 with 19 saves and a 1.15 ERA before Tommy John surgery ended his season. He still was third in the Eastern League in saves behind Anthony Slama and Vinnie Pestano and tied with Geno Espineli for the most saves by a Giants farmhand. He missed much of 2010 while recuperating but did do well with the AZL Giants (2-0, 4 UER in 10 2/3 IP) and San Jose (3-0, 4.05).

In 2011, Otero was with the Richmond Flying Squirrels (2-1, Sv, 1.42, 4 BB in 38 IP) and Fresno Grizzlies (2-3, 12 Sv, 3.25). He fanned 76 in 74 innings. His 56 appearances tied Mitch Lively for 4th in the Giants chain.

Major League Career

Otero made the Giants' staff out of spring training in 2012. He debuted in their second game of the year, entering in the 5th with a 4-2 deficit against the Diamondbacks on April 7th, after Madison Bumgarner had been lifted for a pinch-hitter. He struck out his first batter, Justin Upton, on three pitches. Miguel Montero singled then the control expert threw a wild pitch. Chris Young doubled but Otero recovered to fan Paul Goldschmidt. After an intentional walk to Jason Kubel, John McDonald grounded out. In the 6th, Otero retired counterpart Dan Hudson, allowed a Ryan Roberts single then got Aaron Hill to ground into a 6-4-3 double play. Otero left for pinch-hitter Brett Pill in the 7th.
