Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Geno Espineli had been named to the US Olympic Baseball team to take part in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but was called up to the San Francisco Giants a few days later to replace Keiichi Yabu in the Giants' bullpen; he was thus replaced on the Team USA roster. He made his major league debut on July 20th with a scoreless inning against the Milwaukee Brewers. He then earned his first Major League win in his next outing against the Washington Nationals on July 23rd.

Espineli is of Filipino background -- both of his parents were born there. He shares this distinction with just one other major-leaguer, Bobby Balcena.

Espineli pitched for the Philippines in the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. He closed a 8-2 win over Thailand, relieving Charlie Labrador and retiring Jack Daru, Mukkapol Subsulekun and Yannapat Arpornsiri in order (the latter two on strikeouts). He also worked the 9th of a 10-6 loss to New Zealand, replacing Vladimir Eguia and getting Max Brown on a grounder, Alan Schoenberger on a fly and Tim Auty on strikes.
