Biographical Information[edit]
First baseman Kiel Roling made it to AA in 2010.
Roling was All-State twice in baseball and football and once in basketball in high school. He set a school record of nine homers in 2004 (in 19 games).
In 2006, he hit .266 in junior college. The Arizona Diamondbacks took him in the 31st round of the 2006 amateur draft. Kiel went on to Arizona State and batted .356/.434/.639 with 57 runs, 15 homers and 63 RBI in 58 games. He was named the All-American DH by the American Baseball Coaches Association and the All-Pacific-10 Conference DH. He was second in the Pac-10 in homers, one behind Brett Wallace and tied for third in RBI. As a junior, the New Mexican slugger fell to .340/.442/.553 with 51 RBI in 58 games, showing less pop.
The Colorado Rockies took him in the 6th round of the 2008 amateur draft. After signing with scout Mike Ericson, he batted .344/.417/.641 with 17 RBI in 18 contests for the Casper Ghosts. In 2009, Roling kept on rolling, producing at a .331/.401/.593 rate for the Asheville Tourists. He led the South Atlantic League in average, slugging and OPS and was second to Derek Norris in OBP. He blasted 20 homers, second to Ryan Harvey's 23 among Rockies minor leaguers. Roling failed to make the South Atlantic League All-Star team.
Roling faced his first struggles as a pro with the 2010 Tulsa Drillers, hitting only .222/.286/.390 through 89 games.
