Buster Posey Award

From BR Bullpen

(Redirected from Johnny Bench Award)

The Buster Posey Award is an award given annually to the best collegiate catcher. The award was first awarded in 2000 and is was originally named the Johnny Bench Award after former catcher Johnny Bench. It was renamed in 2019, to mark the award's 20th attribution, in honor of Buster Posey, its most prominent winner. Posey was still an active player at the time, so it was quite unusual to have such a prestigious award renamed in his honor. He was also considered a more appropriate namesake than Bench, who, for all his greatness, had never played college baseball.

A panel of selected sportscasters, sportswriters, NCAA Division I Head Coaches and professional scouts determine the winner.
