Biographical Information[edit]

Joey Wong has been a minor league infielder. His father, David Wong, was a minor league pitcher and college pitching coach.

Joey was 3 for 9 with two walks and 3 runs for the US Youth Team in the 2004 Pan American Youth Championships. He hit .451 as a high school junior, winning All-State and .438 as a senior, again All-State. The Houston Astros took him in the 46th round of the 2006 amateur draft but he did not sign. He hit .288/.374/.332 with 41 runs in 67 games as a college freshman, fielding .987 as the main second baseman for Oregon State, forming a double play combo with Darwin Barney and Jordan Lennerton. He hit .368 with 5 runs in the 2007 College World Series and played error-free defense as OSU won the national title. He made the All-Series team at 2B. He slumped as a sophomore (.244/.341/.353, 37 R in 52 G, .968 FLD%). As a junior, he hit .255/.363/.333 with 36 runs in 56 games and fielded .976.

The Colorado Rockies took Wong in the 24th round of the 2009 amateur draft. The scout was Chris Forbes. As a shortstop for the Tri-City Dust Devils, he hit .215/.360/.254 with 34 walks in 70 games, fielding .985, and stealing 9 bases in 11 tries. He led the Northwest League with 13 times hit by pitch, was 9th in walks (between Kevin Clark and Hak-ju Lee) and led shortstops in fielding percentage, putouts (118), assists (219) and double plays (51). He was third in the Rockies chain in times plunked. He hit .223/.296/.311 and fielded .975 for the 2010 Asheville Tourists. His 12 sacrifice hits led Rockies farmhands and tied Jose Torres for 4th in the South Atlantic League.

In 2011, Joey was a utility infielder for Asheville. He produced at a .286/.353/.408 clip with 20 doubles. His 11 sacrifice hits tied Alonzo Harris for second in the SAL and were also second in the Rockies chain. He had neither a set position nor a steady team in 2012, appearing at 2B, SS and 3B for Tri-City (6 for 29, 2B, 5 BB), Asheville (.250/.300/.393 in 14 G) and the Modesto Nuts (.247/.313/.337 in 24 G). In 2013, he hit .240/.304/.330 in 92 games as a utility infielder for the AA Tulsa Drillers. His 12 sacrifice hits were third in the Texas League behind Cristhian Adames and Delta Cleary.

Wong hit .290/.381/.385 with 27 runs in 45 games for the Perth Heat in the 2013-2014 Australian Baseball League. He was 8th in OBP, tied for second in caught stealing (5) and tied Brad Harman for 5th in runs. He then excelled in the finals, going 4 for 9 with a double and a RBI. In game one, his 14th-inning double off Sean Toler scored Corey Adamson with the winner. He was named MVP of the finals.

Wong became an assistant coach at Seattle University in 2022.
